Reciting duas (supplications) during Hajj are often obligatory and highly recommended practices 

that strengthens the connection a pilgrim creates with Allah (SWT). Each step of the Hajj pilgrimage offers a beautiful opportunity to seek Allah (SWT)’s blessings, His mercy, and forgiveness through these specific duas. From the moment you set your intention, for Hajj, to entering the pure state of Ihram, and performing the rites of Tawaf and Sa’i, the recitation of duas is deeply important. This blog will guide you through the essential duas to recite at each stage of Hajj, helping you to make the most of your spiritual journey and ensuring that your pilgrimage is blessed and successful. 

Preparing for the Journey of Hajj 

Before departing for this sacred journey, it is essential that a pilgrim prepares themselves both mentally and spiritually. While this is easier said than done, there is an easy supplication that an individual can recite to help them as they make the intention to prepare themselves for Hajj: 

“Labbayka Allahumma Hajjan” 

This dua is a part of a longer supplication called the “Talbiya” which is recited as pilgrims walk around the Kaaba seven times during Tawaf (we will explore this dua later in the article). The verse “Labbayka Allahumma Hajjan” translates to “Here I am, O Allah (SWT), making Hajj.” 

Dua for Safety and Precaution 

When going for Hajj, many are a bit overwhelmed with the stress of ensuring that they have a safe journey, and that they remain safe during their travels at their destination. These three duas are great to recite throughout your journey to have Allah (SWT)’s protection over you at all times: 

“Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Subhaanal-ladhee sakkhara lanaa haadha wa ma kunna muqrineena wa inna ila laamun qaliboon” 

This is a common dua recited before a person goes for travel, and it translates to “Allah (SWT) is the Greatest, Allah (SWT) is the Greatest, Allah (SWT) is the Greatest. Glory is to Him Who has provided this for us though we could never have had it by our efforts. Surely, unto our Lord we are returning.” This dua is a specific verse from Surah Az-Zukhruf in The Clear Quran®. 

“Bismillahi tawwakalto ‘alallaahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illah billah” 

This dua is great to recite when you want protection while traveling. It translates to “I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah (SWT) from the evil of what He has created.” 

“A’audhu bi kalimaatil-laahi at tam-mati min sharri makhalaq” 

This dua is an easy one to remember if you want protection from all harm during your journey. It translates to “I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah (SWT) from the evil of what He has created.” 

However, not every dua has to be recited just when you are departing. There is also a short dua that you can recite when you return from travels as well. 

“Aayiboona, taa’iboona, ‘abidoona lirabbina haamidoon” 

This dua translates to “We return, repent, worship, and praise our Lord.” 

Entering the State of Ihram 

Ihram is a sacred state that a pilgrim must enter before performing the rites of Hajj. The following duas are essential during this stage. 

1. Dua when you first wear the Ihram: “Allahumma inni uridul Hajja fa yassirhu li wataqabbalahu minni” this dua translates to “O Allah (SWT), I intend to perform Hajj, so make it easy for me and accept it from me.” 
2. Talbiyah (The Call of the Pilgrims): “Labbayk Allahumma Labayk. Labayka la shareeka laka labayk. Innal hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal mulk. La shareeka lak” this dua translates to “Here I am, O Allah (SWT), here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Surely, all praise and all blessings are Yours, and all sovereignty, You have no partner.” 

The Talbiyah is highly important to recite, and correctly, during the Hajj pilgrimage. This supplication allows the pilgrim to express their full submission and obedience to Allah (SWT), proclaiming monotheism, and acknowledging Allah (SWT)’s blessings and sovereignty. It makes the pilgrim focus, it unites everyone together, and it also connects them back to the Prophetic tradition of reciting the Talbiyah. This dua reinforces gratitude, humility, and the shared purpose of the global community. 

Arrival in Makkah 

When a pilgrim looks at the Kaaba, this is a moment of intense spirituality that a person now feels with their Creator. Here are some duas that you can recite at this moment.

• When you see the Kaaba for the first time: “Allahumma zid hadha al-bayta tashrefeen wa ta’theeman wa takreeman wa mahabatan wa zid man sharfahu wa karramahu mimman hajjahu awi’tamrahu tashreefan wa takreeman wa ta’theemam wa birran” this dua translates to “O Allah (SWT) increase this House in honor, nobility, and respect, and increase the honor, nobility, and respect of those who honor it and perform Hajj and Umrah to it.” 

1. When you enter Masjid al-Haram: “A’udhu bilaahil-’azim wa biwajhil-karim wa sultanihil-qadeem minash-shaytanir-rajeem. Bismillah, Allahumma salli’ ‘ala Muhammadin wa alihi wa sallim, Allahumma ighfir li dhunoobi waftah li abwaba rahmatika” this dua translates to “I seek refuge in Allah (SWT), the Almighty, and in His noble Face, and in His eternal authority from the accursed Satan. In the name of Allah (SWT). O Allah (SWT) send blessings on Muhammad (SAW) and his family, and grant me Your forgiveness, and open the doors of Your mercy for me.” 

Performing the Tawaf

Tawaf, the act of walking around the Kaaba seven times, is a core ritual of Hajj and one that people often see when looking up pictures of Hajj. Here are the duas for each round of Tawaf. 

• Round 1: “SubhanAllah wa bihamdihi, SubhanAllahil-’azim” this dua translates to “Glory be to Allah (SWT) and all praise be to Him, Glory be to Allah (SWT) the Supreme.” 

• Round 2: “Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina adhaban-naar” this dua translates to “Our Lord, give us in this world good and in the Hereafter good, and save us from the punishment of the Fire.” 

• Round 3: “SubhanAllah, wal hamdulillah, wa laa ilaaha illallah, wallahu Akbar” this dua translates to “Glory be to Allah (SWT), and praise be to Allah (SWT), and there is no God but Allah (SWT), and Allah (SWT) is the Greatest.” 

• Round 4: “La ilaaha illallah wahduhu la sharika lah, lahul-malku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer this dua translates to “There is no God but Allah (SWT) alone, He has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over everything.” 

• Round 5: “Astaghfirulaa hal-’azim alladhi laa ilaaha illah Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum wa atubu ilayh” this translates to “I seek the forgiveness of Allah (SWT), the Mighty, whom there is no deity except Him, the Living, the Eternal, and I repent to Him.” 

• Round 6: “Rabbighfir warham wa anta khayrur rahimeen” this dua translates to “My Lord, forgive me and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful.” 
• Round 7: “Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum, birahmatika astagheeth” this dua translates to “O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, in Your mercy I seek relief.” 

Duas at the Multazam (part of the Kaaba where will profess and repent for their sins): “Allahumma inni as’aluka al-afwa wal-’afiyata fiddunya wal-akhirah” this dua translates to “O Allah (SWT), I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and in the Hereafter.” 

Performing Sa’i

Sa’i is the ritual of walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah. Here are some duas you can recite as you complete this step of Hajj. 

“Inna as-Safa wal-Marwata min sha’a’irillah” this dua translates to “Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah (SWT).” 

“Rabbi ighfir warham wa anta al-’azizu al-akram” this dua translates to “My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the Most Honorable, the Most Generous.” 

The Day of Arafah 

The Day of Arafah is known as the peak of the Hajj pilgrimage, and this is a great time for deep self-reflection, and praying to Allah (SWT). The Prophet (SAW) has said, “The best supplication is the one made on the Day of Arafah (at-Tirmidhi).” 

1. Dua for the Day of Arafah: “La ilaaha ilallah wahadahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer” this dua translates to “There is no God but Allah (SWT) alone, He has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over everything.” 
2. Dua for Forgiveness and Mercy: “Allahumma inni nas’aluka ridaaka wal-jannah wa na’udhu bika min sakhatika wannar” this dua translates to “O Allah (SWT), we ask You for Your pleasure and Paradise, and we seek refuge in You from Your wrath and Hellfire.” 

Muzdalifah and Mina 

Muzdalifah and Mina are critical locations in the Hajj pilgrimage. Here are the duas for these places. 

1. Dua to recite at Muzdalifah: “Allahumma inni as’aluka khayra haadhihi al-balad, wa khayra ahliha, wa khayra ma feeha, wa a’udhu bika min sharriha, wa sharri ahliha, wa sharri ma feeha” this dua translates to “O Allah (SWT), I ask You for the good of this town, and the good of its people, and the good that is in it, and I seek refuge in You from its evil, and the evil of its people, and the evil that is in it.” 
2. Duas for the stoning of the Jamarat in Mina: “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar” this dua translates to “In the name of Allah (SWT), Allah (SWT) is the Greatest.” 

Duas for the Completion of Hajj

1. Duas for the completion of Hajj: “Alhamdulillah allathee qadhaya ‘anna hadha wa maa kunna linahtadee lawlaa an hadana Allah” this dua translates to “Praise be to Allah (SWT) who has relieved us of this duty and guided us, for we could not have been guided had Allah (SWT) not guided us.” 
2. Dua for the acceptance of Hajj: However, fi you want to pray for the acceptance of your Hajj, you can recite this dua: “Rabbana taqabbal minna innaka antas-samee’ul-‘aleem” this dua translates to “Our Lord, accept this from us, for indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing.” 
3. Dua for returning home safely: “A’udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajeem. Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alallah, la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah” this dua translates to “I seek refuge in Allah (SWT) from the accursed Satan. In the name of Allah (SWT), I place my trust in Allah (SWT), there is no power and no strength except with Allah (SWT).”
